‘Money Makes the Mare Go’. That was a famous proverb written by George Colman Jr. as a comic song for a musical play by one Mr. Stephen Storace which says that if you pay enough, people will show interest in working for you emphasizing the desire to acquire money to have good food, beautiful clothes, and luxuries. A rich man commands respect and is considered successful in life. Though the spiritualists decry the earning and accumulation of wealth restricting the path towards salvation, the materialistic world looks forward and aspires to accumulate wealth which indeed is a great force in life. Wealth earned earnestly or by hook or crook bears its value and does its part in the destiny of the individual.

The ways, as mentioned earlier, to acquire the desired wealth are too many. Primarily Business and a dignified Career or Profession stand atop in distinguishing the way the money so earned.

Business means habitual profession or trade; and the word does not point towards intellectual occupation, science or learning. In French, Business is humorously explained as dealing with and enjoying other people’s money. The business caters to the needs and even to the luxuries of the civilised world, playing a vital role in the generation of the monetary economy of a government. The extent of profits depends upon multifarious factors, such as capital outlay, the nature of the products dealt with (perishables/non-perishables), their ruling prices, the brains behind the business (advertising and marketing techniques), and the political and economic conditions.

In Business, you may have mental abilities, intelligence, foresight, powers of judgement and discretion which are the prerequisites to attain success but without the element of ‘luck’ blended and compounded with them, your success will be nullified. Sagacity (Brilliance), Strength and luck are the three powers in the world. Sagacity and strength may make you work hard as the two Oars in your two hands to row the boat you are sailing into the sea but all may be last again by a sudden storm and to recoup you need only ‘luck’ to favour you.

Now, let us look at some of the Astrological factors that may give good governance over Business and profit-making and accumulation of wealth.

For Business, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces seem best suited with the earthy signs on the 7^th house from them. Libra, Aquarius and Gemini rank next with fiery houses on their 7^th. The earthy signs, especially the benefics posited in them give the greater aptitude for business. The lords of the 1^st, 5^th, and 7^th houses together with those of the respective decanates (Drekkanas) will give a clear picture.

A Movable sign on the 5^th house denotes quickness of execution and decision in all enterprises, even in sales and purchases, as well as the necessary finance for enterprise and speculation coupled with some amount of haste and lack of forethought, since the 5^th house governs the intellect and imagination (the strength of mind – mental acumen)

A fixed sign on the 5^th does not give much incentive to speculate in the business but gives even apathy and indifference to such thoughts unless indicated by some planets in certain positions. The benefic planets and their aspects will act in a supportive way.

A Common/Dual sign on the 5^th denotes much vacillation and indecision in buying or selling. Watery and also a common sign (Pisces). Gives great hesitancy and indecision with even loss of opportunities. Hence watery signs on the 5^th are not usually strong unless aspected by benefics but they be illusions or imaginations. Cancer rising with Scorpio, a watery sign 5^th seems to be an exception to the above and this is evidently due to Mars being its ruler, supportive of courageous ventures, acting as better advisers than executors.

Though the 2^nd house predominantly rules over wealth, certain other houses also support them for retention. The 9^th house is an important trine and is called the House of Fortune. The 10^th House indicates the type of occupation or means of livelihood. The 1^st, 5^th, and 9^th houses are positioned 5^th from one another (in trines to each other), and act as a tripod on which the strength of the Birth Chart/natal chart depends. The 11^th is the house of gains and is positioned directly opposite– 180° - to the 5^th house. Therefore, the benefic planets in the 5^th house may favourably aspect the 11^th house and thus add to the vitality in the accumulation of good fortune. The 8^th house indicates unearned wealth or a legacy or money by luck like race and lotteries. Any beneficial planet in the 8^th, especially Mercury, confers prosperity on the natives. However, Jupiter should be strong in respect of a House or sign to be above to provide a good income.

To conclude, once again we go back to ‘Luck’ – the invisible force as that of Karma of earlier births, as inherited from father. Hence, the ninth house, which denotes Luck, also denotes father. As the 5^th house relates to Sanchita Karma, the actions in the current birth add to it and support in begetting a worthy child. So, while the 5^th house relates its action to free will, the 9^th house ignites everything with Fate. A person’s life is enforced by free will and fate in the form of the trinal relationship of the 1^st (Ascendant/Lagna), 5^th and 9^th house.

The 1oth house in a horoscope signifies one’s profession, status, authority, honour, and fame. The Significators are the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn. Planets occupying the 10^th house or aspecting it, the lord of the 10^th house, the Navamsha occupied by the lord of the 10^th house, and the significators of the 10^th house – all provide some definite guidelines in selecting one’s profession.

The airy signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) indicate mental or intellectual pursuits, planning, oratory skills. The Watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) force you to look for occupations connected with liquids, travelling, dressmaking, hospitals, and navigation or marine activities. The fiery signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) are inclined towards professions linked with fire, iron, metals, surgery, and factories. The earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) are favourable for businesses and indicate professions which involve patience, practical ability and labour.

Combinations for Professional Status and Fame:

·       If the 1oth house and its lord are related by conjunction or aspect with benefic planets, the native will earn both respect and position in his profession.

·       If the lords of the 9^th and the 10^th houses exchange places, that is, the lord of the 9^th house is in the 10^th and vice versa, the native will enjoy much fame and honour.

·       The presence of Mars or the Sun in the 10^th house elevates a person to a higher position, thus giving him greater authority.

·       The native will be a high-ranking person if the lords of the 5^th and 10^th houses are posited in their respective houses.

·       If the lord of the 1^st house occupies the 9^th house, and the lord of the 10^th occupies the 1^st, the native will be a famous man with a high status.

To contradict the above, if the lord of the 10^th house occupies the 6^th, 8^th, or 12^th house, the person concerned will not achieve a high position in his career, and will also be troubled by enemies or diseases.
